Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

Category: Young Adult Fiction – fantasy
Series: Yes - Book 1

“Stay back, human. You don’t know what you are dealing with.”

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a brilliant criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn’t know what he’s taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren’t the fairies of bedtime stories. These fairies are armed and they’re dangerous. Artemis thinks he’s got them just where he wants them, but then they stop playing by the rules …

It all began with this book. I first read it some two years ago, enjoyed it tremendously and read the next four books in quick succession.

Artemis’s father mysteriously disappeared about a year ago. While searching tirelessly for him, Artemis devises a plan to restore his family’s fortune. Helping him in his quest is his faithful servant-bodyguard-sidekick, Butler. Butler is a giant of a man whose devotion to the Fowls, especially to Artemis, is complete.

Artemis’s grand plan is to kidnap a fairy and use him/her to blackmail for fairy gold. Yes, unbeknownst to us Mud People, there is a whole population of fairies living amongst us. They live underground, keep out of human’s way, and only come above ground when absolutely necessary. When they do, they are usually invisible to the humans as they use magic to shield themselves.

Fairies are not the only underground inhabitants, though. There are goblins, dwarves, trolls and all manners of creatures living there too. Some are friends to the fairies, but most of them are foes with really nasty attitude.

The deviously brilliant Artemis, equipped with some technologically advanced gadgets, manages to capture a fairy – Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit, an elite branch of the Lower Elements Police. Despite being armed, brave and magical, Holly is no match for Artemis.

When Holly did not return from above ground, her superior, Commander Root, and her friend, Foaly, a centaur, set about to find her. The LEPrecon Unit brings out their troops armed with the latest technological and magical weapons and gadgets but even then, they underestimate Artemis and saving Holly proves to be no easy task. This human is determined and well-prepared to take on the whole LEPrecon Unit in order to get his hands on the fairy gold. A battle of wits and wills ensues between the humans and the fairy folks such as never seen before.

The author did a brilliant job crafting a smart, fast-paced and super-funny fantasy-adventure that brings together some vivid and original personalities who you can’t help but like – Artemis, Holly, Commander Root, Butler and Foaly – they form the central cast that appears in the subsequent books.

This book is unputdownable. Oh, the weapons, gadgets and vehicles – both humankind and magical – they are so cool I wish I had some too.

4.5 out of 5. I really like it. It’s fantastic, a keeper.

M, perhaps just try the 1st book and see how you like it. :-) I think you can easily get it off BookMooch or PBS?

K had read some of these books too, and she liked them quite a bit. She and I were talking about it at one time and that piqued L's interest enough for her to get Book 1. LOL [There was no pimping, I swear!] She hasn't read it yet, as far as I know. ;-)

Hi Jace! I just wanted to stop by and tell you I liked the book. Actually, to be honest, I tried to read this book about a year ago and couldn't get into it. However, my local library had it on download. I listed to it, and was hooked. It's not something I normally read, but I enjoyed it. The book was well written and fasted paced. Thanks for bloging about it :) ~ Sarah
