No Rest For The Wicked by Kresley Cole

Book Description

A vampire soldier weary of life…
Centuries ago, Sebastian Wroth was turned into a vampire – a nightmare in his mind – against his will. Burdened with hatred and alone for ages, he sees little reason to live. Until an exquisite, fey creature comes to kill him, inadvertently saving him instead.

A Valkyrie assassin dispatched to destroy him…
When Kaderin the Cold Hearted lost her two beloved sisters to a vampire attack long ago, a benevolent force deadened her sorrow – accidentally extinguishing all of her emotions. Yet whenever she encounters Sebastian, her feelings – particularly lust – emerge multiplied. For the first time, she’s unable to complete a kill.

Competitors in a legendary hunt…
The course will take them through ancient tombs and catacombs, seeking relics around the world, and the prize for victory is powerful enough for Kaderin to change history and prevent her sister’s deaths. Sebastian competes as well, and begins winning – her. But when forced to choose between Sebastian and reuniting her family, how can Kaderin live without either?

This is the 2nd book of the Immortal After Dark series, featuring a new couple. You can read this without having read the 1st book, A Hunger Like No Other.

Sebastian and Kaderin are a well-matched, well-fleshed out couple. Their background story is well done, and that helps the reader in understanding them and their motivation. Sebastian is a wonderful Beta - considerate, endearing, smart – and he will do anything for Kaderin. Kaderin is a little difficult to like, as she comes across as cold and selfish, but I thawed toward her as the story progresses. She is difficult with Sebastian, always pushing him away, and when he finally gets angry, I cheered! About time he shows her what he’s made of.

The Talisman’s Hie, somewhat an immortal Amazing Race, takes up a huge chunk of the story – good thing it’s interesting, fast-paced and well told. Sebastian and Kaderin’s relationship develops further while they are accomplishing the arduous tasks.

Various characters from the 1st book make an appearance here. We learn more about Nikolai Wroth (Sebastian’s brother), his Valkyrie wife Myst, his other brothers (Murdoch and Conrad) and their background story. Bowen, the Lykae who plucked at my heartstrings in the 1st book, clashes with Sebastian and Kaderin in a convincing manner, and he continues to wrench my heart. Poor guy … he really deserves a happily-ever-after. I can’t wait to read his story, the 3rd book, Wicked Deeds On A Winter’s Night.

No Rest For The Wicked is a compelling read from start to finish. There isn’t much I don’t like, really. I think the author is going from strength to strength with this series, and I look forward to the rest of the stories.
