Contemplation: The TBR Hill

I’m in a contemplative mood today. I tallied up my TBR (to-be-read) books just to see how many there are. Not too bad, I tell myself. Just 57. Merely a hill. I can still add 10 more and not feel guilty (or so I’d like to think).

I know of some romance readers who have amassed between 150 and 350 unread books. Now, theirs are what I call mountains.

But…in all honesty, I do need to whittle my hill down. These are books that I was excited about. These are books that I anticipated and hunted down. These are books I paid good money for. So there is no plausible reason why they should be sitting there gathering dust for months on end. Right.

So…I solemnly declare that I shall not buy any more books until I’ve made a dent in my TBR hill that’s equivalent to 10 books.

My reading buddies (you know who you are)…you all just go ahead and buy all those new books. I forgive you. *LOL*

You've got way more willpower than I do! At last count, I've got 417 in my TBR pile (thanks to those dreaded friends of the library sales), but I still get the urge to pick up new books every now and then. Just wish I had endless amounts of time to read them.

Holy cripes, Dev! 417?? I'd freak out.

Hi Jace! I followed the yellow link road over from Nath's blog. I really like yours!

My TBR pile is on the smaller side (haven't counted lately, but I'd say mine is probably close to yours) and it stresses me out. I see new books I want and think "I can't buy that, I have a ton waiting TBR at home!"

Maybe I'll take this challenge with you...after I buy the new In Death book, that is. :)

You are all rank amateurs. I'm at 900. Seriously. 900. And yes, I have weeded a few times in the past. Honest.

OK - we'll just see how you do :) When you get around to the different blogs, those books will start calling you - oh yes they will *g*

Dev, I know how hard it is to resist buying! I honestly think that every book-lover has a TBR pile, irrespective of the number. I suppose a TBR pile is all right, as long as you have the space to store them! *grin* At least you'll never run out of books to read! *LOL*

Me...my bookcases are fairly bursting at the seams. My next mission is to harden my heart and give away/trade those books I won't reread.

Holly, I'm happy to see you here. I got on to Nath's blog via Kristie (J)'s. *g*

If you want to join me in this challenge, it'll be wonderful!

You know what? When you're tempted by books that call out to you while you're on this challenge, you can do what I do...put them on the wishlist, and go get them when you're released! But then, the TBR will be back to what it was, wouldn't it? *LOL*

Wendy, yours is the Everest! *gasp* I swear, 900 is the highest number I've heard of todate!

Oh, Kristie, I know it too well!!! I was on Nath's blog and already I've added the 1st In Death book to my wishlist...that's AFTER I added Lord Of The Fading Lands, which I read on yours!

Well - I'm not sure I should tell you this or not - but after you read Naked in Death - and you really have to read it first to get a sense of the characters, there are 23 more that you may be adding to that list. And that's just JD Robb alone *g*.

and PS - if you don't like Eve Dallas at first that's OK. She's one tough cookie and takes some warming up too, but she is worth it. Instead just let the aura or Roarke wash over you until you get more of a sense of Eve and her demons.

Kristie (J) said...

oops - meant the aura OF Roarke.

Kristie, thanks for your warning about the In Death series. Imagine...a 20+ book series that readers (not just fans) still want to read! For this reason alone, I'm willing to give it a try.

Also, year after year, Eve and Roarke appeared on the top rungs of the Couple List in the AAR Poll. That's another motivation to read their story. *g*

Yep!! They're there for a reason *g*
