If Angels Burn by Lynn Viehl

Spoilers Alert!

Book Description

She restores the light of hope…
Dr. Alexandra Keller is Chicago’s most brilliant reconstructive surgeon.

He dwells in shadow…
Michael Cyprien is New Orleans’s most reclusive millionaire – and in desperate need of Dr. Keller’s skills.

A new dawn awaits them both…
Beneath the foundation of a mansion in the heart of the Garden District, Alexandra will perform an illegal surgery. Her patient’s disfigurement is beyond medical repair. But his body’s ability to recuperate from his wounds borders on the miraculous.

Alexandra knows Michael Cyprien is no ordinary patient. Intrigued by how his remarkable physiology might benefit medical science, she is even more compelled by his presence – and the mystery surrounding him and his associates, a cadre of immortals who call themselves the Darkyn…

First and foremost, while this story is categorized as Paranormal Romance on the spine of the book, it borders on “horror”, with a romance thrown in. The feel of the whole story is dark, intense, gritty and somewhat gruesome. There is very little lightness.

Alexandra and Michael are strong-willed and independent characters. Alexandra is a very smart and capable woman, and a thoroughly dedicated and compassionate doctor, but she comes across a little too hard-assed and mouthy. Between the two, Michael seems to be the sympathetic and calm, albeit underdeveloped, character.

Their romance is fraught with difficulties, intensity and passion. Don’t expect any heartwarming Hallmark moments. Alexandra fights her attraction for Michael. She resents him for turning her into something else. She fights what she’s becoming and she fights when he tries to help her.

The gruesome scenes are aplenty, and the author does not gloss over the unpleasant – there are tortures and forced sex. One does require a stronger stomach to read through some of them.

A word of caution to readers of the Christian faith - be aware that you may find some scenes disturbing.

I find the author’s writing crisp, edgy and very readable. She has created a world that is dark and chilling. Her characters are both tortured, loyal and courageous, as well as mad, twisted and downright evil.

I was sucked into the story from the first page. Despite being disturbed by some scenes, I kept on reading because I wanted to find out what happened next, and just how disturbing it would get. Let me say this…I will not be reading the rest of the series.
